IATA expects passenger demand to fall further and warns it could take longer for a recovery to emerge compared to previous recessions.
Last week IATA reported a 10% drop in international RPKs for February and widened its loss estimate for 2009 from $2.5 billion to $4.7 billion. Martinique has become more accessible to US travelers thanks to newly-expanded service from American Eagle Airlines. Beginning May 1, 2009, American Eagle will offer daily service between its hub in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique. That’s when Southwest slashed summer travel prices in the U.S. to one-way rates of $49 to $99.

U.S. airline chief executives on the board of the Air Transport Association are heartened that Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said this week that modernization of the national air-traffic control system will be the top priority of the Federal Aviation Administration, said Glenn Tilton, CEO of United Airlines parent UAL Corp. and current chairman of the industry lobbying group. Air Jamaica will cut its New York-Barbados service, even as it increases travel on other routes as the airline aligns capacity to meet market demand.
Flights on the Barbados flight will be suspended on April 20.
At the same time, the other services that will increase include the New York-Grenada route, which will have four weekly flights; Fort Lauderdale to Jamaica, which will have five daily flights; New York to Jamaica, four daily flights; and a daily service between Toronto and Jamaica.
In all, Air Jamaica will increase its overall schedule to 246 weekly flights.

London — Analysts say the year-old Open Skies aviation pact, which encouraged partnerships such as Delta Air Lines’ with Air France, has brought passengers lower fares and improved schedules even as airlines buck global economic head winds.
“It now costs about as much for me to fly to Europe from the East Coast of the U.S. as it does for me to fly to the West Coast,” said Ernest Arvai, an airline industry consultant based in Windham, N.H. Read the rest of this entry »

The European Union is set to sign an ‘open skies’ agreement with Canada, under which Canadian and European Union airlines would be able to fly freely between any EU airport and any Canadian airport.
