ST. JOHN’S, Antigua (AP) – The Caribbean airline LIAT is canceling more than 100 flights as pilots call in sick over a long-running pay dispute.
Airline spokesman Desmond Brown says it appears none of the 137 flights scheduled for Wednesday will be able to take off. He said more than 3,000 travelers were booked on those flights.
The sickout comes one day after the regional carrier’s chief executive met with the chairman of the pilots’ association on disputes over pension payments and other issues.
The Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association said after the meeting that the airline falsely claimed an agreement had been reached for resolving the disputes. It said the pilots would show “strong resentment” if the company did not immediately withdraw those remarks.
